Hallway wall panelling ideas for small and narrow entrances

Good hallway wall panelling starts with the space you need to keep clear. A half-height treatment or one textured feature can give a small entrance character while keeping the layout simple. Before choosing a profile, check door swings, the walking route and how the new surface will meet existing skirting.

These hallway panelling ideas focus on two paintable polyurethane designs, DORIQUE and CANELÉ S. Start with a measured plan, then use colour and lighting to make the detail feel at home.

Measure the clearances first

  1. Find the narrowest point. Measure between projecting skirting, radiators and furniture. Record each usable wall section separately, including door frames, sockets and switches.
  2. Allow for the finished depth. Both panels are 14.5 mm thick. Opposing panelled walls therefore add 29 mm of panel thickness, before adhesive and preparation. Check handles and doors against that new surface.
  3. Test the footprint. Mark the proposed area with suitable low-tack tape after testing the existing finish. Walk through with a shopping bag and open nearby doors fully.

Choose a layout for your entrance

Half-height panelling creates a continuous lower-wall detail while leaving space above for pictures or a mirror. Its top edge need not sit exactly halfway up the wall. Test a line that works with switches, furniture and adjoining rooms.

A tall feature section can give a clear end wall a focal point. Check the actual height: a 2 m panel cannot cover a taller wall in one piece. Plan joints or a deliberate upper boundary before ordering.

A compact section beside a bench or console often suits a hallway interrupted by several doors. Align its ends with clear architectural boundaries and compare the layout from the front door.

Compare two fluted wall panels

DORIQUE has a pronounced fluted design that brings a strong rhythm to a feature wall. CANELÉ S offers a finer repeated relief for a more understated composition. Compare both with existing staircase spindles, door frames and floor patterns.

Both are factory-primed polyurethane panels measuring 2,000 × 300 × 14.5 mm. Their paintable surfaces let you coordinate the finished colour with the entrance. Follow the current product guidance when selecting paint and installation materials.

Look at the profile from the angle at which you enter the hallway. Side lighting can make the relief more prominent than it appears in a straight-on photograph.

Balance colour and light

Painting the upper wall and panelling in the same colour gives a gentle transition, with shadows defining the texture. A contrasting lower section makes the top line more noticeable, so its height and finish become important design decisions.

Try painted test boards beside the flooring and doors. View them in daylight and under the lighting you use in the evening. Soft stone, warm white or muted green can be starting points; the right choice depends on the surrounding finishes.

Consider maintenance when choosing the final paint. Coats and bags may brush the wall, so check the paint maker's cleaning guidance and compatibility with the panel manufacturer's recommendations.

Plan quantities from the panel layout

Draw the individual panels rather than relying on wall area alone. For an illustrative 1.8 m-wide section with vertical panels at their full 2 m length, six 300 mm-wide panels span the nominal width. This excludes cuts, tolerances and edge details; it is a layout example, not a final order quantity.

Mark switches, sockets and every joint. For a lower treatment, plan the cuts and allow for material lost during cutting before assuming offcuts can be reused. Include adhesive, finishing materials and paint in your project plan.

Resolve edges and fittings before installation

Check where the panelled area meets skirting and door frames. Existing trim may be shallower than the new surface. Agree a suitable top and side finish, and check the complete build-up before committing to the layout.

Address damp, loose finishes or unsuitable surfaces before fitting, following the current installation instructions. Mirrors, shelves and coat hooks need suitable fixings into a supporting substrate. Keep electrical fittings accessible and use a qualified electrician for alterations.

Frequently asked questions

Will panelling make a narrow hallway feel smaller?

It reduces the physical width by its finished depth. Visually, one restrained feature and a coordinated colour scheme can keep the entrance calm. Test the layout in your own lighting.

How high should hallway panelling be?

There is no universal height. Mark the proposed top line and check it against switches, furniture and door details before deciding.

Can I paint DORIQUE and CANELÉ S?

Both are factory-primed for painting. Confirm compatible paint, preparation and application requirements in the current product instructions.

Can I fit coat hooks directly to the panels?

Plan fixings that reach a suitable supporting substrate. Decorative panels should not be relied on to carry coats, mirrors or shelving.

Bring your hallway panelling ideas together

For a small entrance or narrow corridor, useful wall panelling starts with clearances, a deliberate layout and considered edges. Compare DORIQUE and CANELÉ S, then turn your preferred fluted wall design into a measured plan that works with everyday life.
