Bedroom wall panels: plan the wall behind your bed

The best bedroom wall panels work with the bed, bedside tables and evening light. Before choosing a finish, draw the wall behind the bed with every socket and switch included. A carefully placed feature can bring the room together without covering every surface.

Two useful starting points are a painted fluted surface and oak-veneered slats on a dark backing. Each creates a different mood, but both need a measured layout. Start with the way you use the room, then let the material shape the final detail.

Measure the wall with the furniture in place

Record the wall width and height in several places, then add the full bed frame and headboard. Mattress dimensions alone can underestimate the space the bed occupies. Include skirting, curtains, wardrobe doors and anything that projects into the proposed feature.

  • Mark the visible headboard height. A panel edge just behind its top may disappear or create an awkward narrow strip.
  • Draw both bedside tables. Check drawers can open and leave enough space to reach lamps and charging cables.
  • Measure complete socket faceplates. Allow space for plugs, switches and your hand, rather than marking only their centre points.

Compare a feature spanning the bed and tables with a narrower central section. Test the outlines with paper or suitable low-tack tape, checking the existing finish first. View them from the doorway and from the pillow.

Choose painted relief or oak-veneered slats

A colour-led wall with CANELÉ S

CANELÉ S is a factory-primed polyurethane panel with a repeated fluted relief. Each panel measures 2,000 × 300 × 14.5 mm. Its paintable surface lets you coordinate the feature with the surrounding walls, so light and shadow provide the detail. Follow the current product guidance when choosing paint and preparing the finish.

A wood-toned wall with Natural Oak – Black

The Natural Oak – Black slat wall panel combines felt backing and MDF with a real oak veneer finish. It measures 240 × 60 cm and 22 mm thick. The oak grain and dark spaces between the slats give the wall a more contrasted rhythm. Compare that finish with your flooring, bedside furniture and headboard fabric before choosing the room's other colours.

Plan the width, height and joints together

For an illustrative 2.4 m-wide feature, eight CANELÉ S panels installed vertically span the nominal width at 300 mm each. Four Natural Oak – Black panels span that same nominal width at 600 mm each. These are layout examples, not final order quantities: cuts, tolerances, panel junctions and edge details still need checking.

Height changes the plan too. CANELÉ S is 2 m long; the oak-veneered panel is 2.4 m long. Measure the actual wall before assuming either will cover it in one piece. For a lower feature, draw the cut lines and assess which offcuts can genuinely be reused.

A deliberate top edge above the headboard can suit a compact bedroom. A full-height section gives a taller backdrop. In either case, avoid leaving a very narrow final strip merely to centre the pattern on the wall: the bed and usable wall area are better starting points.

Test bedside lighting against the texture

Side lighting makes relief and slat shadows more noticeable. Try your intended lamp position beside a panel before committing, and check for glare while sitting up in bed. Reading comfort and reachable switches should guide the arrangement.

For wall lights, agree mounting positions, cable routes and any socket changes with a qualified electrician before installation. Allow for the panel thickness and complete wall build-up. Light fittings need suitable support; their mounting plates should not be left bridging an uneven surface without an appropriate installation detail.

Resolve edges and fixings before fitting

Draw how the top, sides and bottom meet the plain wall and skirting. Ask about an appropriate edge finish for the chosen panel rather than assuming one trim suits both materials. Check the manufacturer's fitting instructions, substrate requirements and preparation before ordering installation materials.

Keep electrical fittings accessible. A wall-mounted headboard, shelf or bedside table needs fixings suited to its load and the supporting wall; decorative panelling alone should not be treated as structural support.

Bedroom wall panel questions

Should the feature extend beyond the bed?

It can include both bedside tables or frame only the headboard. There is no universal margin. Test the full-size outline with your furniture in place and choose clear, intentional end points.

Can these panels replace a padded headboard?

They create decorative surfaces rather than a cushioned backrest. If you read sitting up, retain a suitable headboard and consider how bedding will meet the wall.

Will slat panels block noise from the next room?

Do not plan on that basis. This guide makes no tested acoustic claim for the proposed wall. Sound transmission needs assessment of the complete wall construction and the source of the noise.

Bring your bedroom feature wall together

Choose bedroom wall panels by their finish, dimensions and relationship to the bed. Compare paintable CANELÉ S with Natural Oak – Black slats, then finalise sockets, lighting, joints and edges on one measured drawing.
