TV wall panels: plan the screen, cables and surrounding space

A good TV feature wall works when the screen is switched off as well as when you are watching it. Wall panels can give the television a deliberate place in the room, but the best starting point is the sofa, cabinet and equipment you already use. Decide how those elements fit together before choosing the finish.

This guide compares walnut and natural oak slat panels for a measured TV-wall layout. The main photograph shows walnut panelling behind a sofa as a material reference; your screen, bracket and cabling need their own plan.

Start with the view from the sofa

Mark the outline of the actual screen on the wall, including its frame. Sit in your usual position and test the height before fixing anything. A decorative centre line on the wall is not necessarily the most comfortable position for watching. Consider the manufacturer's viewing guidance and your own seating arrangement rather than following one universal height.

Add the cabinet, soundbar and any speakers to the same drawing. Check that the television does not visually crowd the furniture or block equipment. If the bracket moves, allow for the screen's full movement and access to connectors.

  • Include the whole wall. Note doors, curtains, radiators, sockets and skirting.
  • Keep a route for maintenance. You should be able to reach connections without dismantling the decorative feature.
  • Test reflections. Look at the screen in daylight and with evening lamps on before deciding where bright lights should sit.

Choose the size of the panelled area

A full-width slatted wall creates a strong backdrop. A narrower vertical section can frame the screen while leaving space for plain wall and artwork. An offset panelled strip beside the television gives an asymmetrical arrangement, especially when it relates to a cabinet or an existing corner.

Compare these options using paper outlines or suitable low-tack tape, tested on the existing finish first. View the composition from the doorway as well as the sofa. Avoid ending a panelled section only a few centimetres from a socket or curtain edge unless that junction has been deliberately resolved.

Compare walnut and natural oak

Walnut slat wall panel has a real walnut veneer finish over MDF slats with felt backing. Its darker wood tone can create a defined feature alongside light upholstery or pale walls. Natural Oak – Black slat wall panel combines real oak veneer, MDF and felt, with a lighter wood surface and dark spaces between the slats. Neither product is a solid-wood board.

Both panels measure 240 × 60 cm and 22 mm thick. Compare a physical finish sample with your cabinet and flooring in the room's actual light. Wood tones do not need to match exactly, but repeated undertones can make different pieces feel more connected.

Plan the bracket, cables and ventilation together

The television must be supported by suitable fixings into an appropriate supporting wall or structure. Decorative panels alone should not carry the screen. Ask the installer to account for the complete wall build-up, bracket requirements and the load before fitting the panels.

Draw power and signal cable routes, access points and the position of any removable covers. Keep sockets accessible. A qualified electrician should handle electrical alterations. Do not hide plugs or equipment inside an inaccessible cavity simply to create a cleaner photograph.

Leave the ventilation and service clearances specified by the television and other equipment manufacturers. Plan around those instructions rather than assuming the gaps between slats provide adequate airflow. A TV wall incorporating a fireplace needs a separate, product-specific heat and installation assessment; this decorative layout guide does not establish suitability.

Check panel dimensions before ordering

For an illustrative 2.4 m-wide feature, four 600 mm-wide panels span the nominal width. The 2.4 m panel length must also suit the intended height. A taller wall requires a considered joint or a different boundary; ordering by square metres alone does not resolve that detail.

Draw every panel, cut and exposed edge. Check the finish at skirting and beside the cabinet, and agree how cut edges will be treated. Follow the current fitting instructions for the chosen panel and substrate. Do not assume the same adhesive or fixing detail suits every wall.

TV wall panel questions

Do acoustic slat panels make a room soundproof?

Do not plan on that basis. Room sound absorption and sound transmission through a wall are different issues. This layout has no tested acoustic rating; assess the full construction if noise control is a project requirement.

Should the panelling be wider than the television?

It can be, but there is no fixed margin. Test the relationship between the screen, cabinet and usable wall width before settling on the edges.

Can I add lighting later?

Plan it now if possible. Cable routes, access and the light fitting's installation requirements are easier to resolve before the panels are fitted. Check the proposed light from your normal viewing position for glare.

Bring your TV feature wall together

Choose TV wall panels as part of a complete furniture and equipment layout. Compare Walnut slat wall panel and Natural Oak – Black slat wall panel, then finalise the screen position, supporting fixings, cable access and panel edges on one drawing.
