Walnut slat wall panels in a dining room with a long table and pendant lighting.

Dining room wall panelling: design around the table and evening light

Dining room wall panelling should look good with the table set and still work when everyone pulls out a chair. Start with the furniture and the space people need to move. A carefully placed feature can define a dining corner or give a separate room a clear focal point without covering every wall.

Walnut slats and painted fluted panels offer two different directions. The first brings a wood-grain finish into the room; the second lets colour and relief do the work. Choose between them after testing the layout in daylight and under your evening lighting.

Measure with the chairs pulled out

Measure the wall and draw the table at its normal size, including any extension you regularly use. Add chairs in their seated and pulled-out positions. Walk the route between the kitchen, table and door, checking it with another person sitting at the table rather than judging the room while it is empty.

Include the sideboard, curtains, radiators, switches and sockets. Note the depth added by the panels and installation build-up. Keep chair backs clear of the finished surface; decorative panelling should not be treated as a substitute for an impact-resistant wall protector.

  • Draw cabinet doors and drawers open. Check they still work beside the new surface.
  • Mark the feature's boundaries. A window reveal, corner or furniture centre line can provide a deliberate stopping point.
  • Test the view when seated. The texture will be closer to eye level than in a hallway or distant feature wall.

Choose one clear composition

A full-height section behind the table can define a dining area within an open-plan room. Keep its edges related to the furniture and surrounding architecture rather than automatically centring it on the longest wall.

A backdrop behind a sideboard can bring storage, a lamp and artwork together. Leave enough plain space around objects so that their outlines do not compete with a busy pattern. Any mirror, shelf or artwork needs fixings appropriate to its weight and the supporting wall.

A lower panelled treatment creates a horizontal boundary around the dining area. Mark the top line at full size before choosing its height. Check it against the sideboard, window sill and chairs, and plan a suitable top edge rather than leaving an unfinished cut visible.

Walnut slats or painted fluted relief?

Walnut slat wall panel combines MDF slats, real walnut veneer and felt backing. Each panel measures 240 × 60 cm and 22 mm thick. Its darker wood tone can work with light walls and mixed furniture finishes. Compare the veneer with the table in the actual room; a photograph cannot settle the relationship between two wood tones.

CANELÉ S 3D wall panel is a factory-primed polyurethane panel measuring 2,000 × 300 × 14.5 mm. The repeated fluted relief can be painted to coordinate with the walls or sideboard. Follow the current product instructions when choosing paint and preparing the finish.

For a calm scheme, give one element the strongest pattern. If the table has a prominent grain and the floor is busy, a coordinated painted surface may be easier to balance. If the furniture is simple, walnut slats can provide more of the room's visual detail.

Test the texture under evening light

A pendant light above the table and a lamp on the sideboard illuminate the wall from different angles. Look at a sample in both positions. Light falling across grooves can make the relief more pronounced, while a more frontal light gives a different impression.

Keep the comfort of seated guests in mind. Check for exposed bright lamps in their line of sight and reflections in mirrors or nearby screens. Any new wall lighting and cable routes should be agreed with a qualified electrician before fitting. Do not cover sockets to simplify the design.

Work out the layout and everyday care

For a nominal 2.4 m-wide section, four 600 mm-wide walnut panels or eight 300 mm-wide CANELÉ S panels span the width. Their lengths differ, so the same width does not produce the same full-height treatment. Draw joints, cuts and edges before calculating the final order.

Consider how the wall will be cleaned near dining furniture. Follow the panel and paint manufacturers' care guidance and test any cleaning method as directed. A decorative dining-room application does not establish suitability as a kitchen splashback or for repeated wet cleaning.

Dining room panelling questions

Does every wall need panelling?

No. One section behind the table or sideboard can be enough to give the room a focus. Keep the rest of the room in the composition when comparing options.

Will slat panels stop conversation travelling to another room?

That cannot be promised from a decorative layout. Acoustic performance depends on the product, installation and room, while sound transmission also depends on the building construction.

Should panelling match the dining table?

It can coordinate without being identical. Compare samples alongside the floor, table and chair upholstery in both daylight and artificial light.
